Will Facebook and Twitter be around in 10 years?
I’ve had this conversation with a few people and each time their opinions have varied. Their opinions have projected their respective demises everywhere from next year to five years, fifty years to forever.
Personally, I see Facebook as a photo album for new generations which is why it will be around for many years to come. Just as out parents stored all of their photos in albums, we have those albums…on Facebook. For that reason alone, the pictures that catalogue our lives, I see Facebook around for a very long time.
I feel the same for Twitter too. I think it’s here to stay but for a completely different reason: news. The breaking-news element of Twitter is what will keep it relevant throughout the years. The ability for people to have an arena to rally around events, causes and information is what will keep Twitter fresh into the future. Sure, there are a million other services where people can logon and have a chat about the latest happenings in the world but Twitter’s character restriction mandates simplicity, an aspect of the web that is overlooked.

They’ll be about as popular as BBS systems that were gasping their dying breaths in ‘99. Soon, only this generation will remember them.

You’re spot on about Facebook. Twitter? I’m not so sure about them specifically. Micro-blogging used for real-time information - definitely!

Completely agree about Facebook. I’m still not so sure about Twitter, but you make a good point about breaking news.
