An RTD Mobile Bus Times Update

These past few weeks have been interesting one for my iPhone app. The update that was slated for release right after Halloween got pushed back and then completely disassembled in favor of a version of the application that will be much better.

The 1.1 update for RTD Mobile Bus Times has turned into the 2.0 release. The next version isn’t just an update. It’s a complete overhaul.

A while back I posted about the next update having 20+ buses included. 2.0 has every bus in RTD’s arsenal. I’m still shooting to have the Hop and the Buff Bus in as well. There’s no reason not to.

No longer will the app work exclusively offline. Moving forward, working offline makes the app almost obsolete. Instead we’ll be using Google Transit data to provide and update the content of the app.

Every time I talk about this app I start it the same way: “This all started out as a project for a Computer Science class…” I’m amazed how it has since taken a complete life of its own. I don’t plan on stopping, either. Every day there’s a new sketch, a new feature or “thing” (in the interest of being vague) that I want to incorporate into RTD Mobile Bus Times.

I’ve had downloads of my app from the UK, Argentina and Australia which has surprised me. I made it for kids at CU, now the state of Colorado and the world wants it which is exactly why 2.0 and beyond needs to be a spectacular app, not just a passable one.

More information will come trickling in as the 2.0 release draws nearer. I’m shooting to have it out by the end of this year. Fingers are crossed.
