The App Store’s Holiday Effect

MobileCrunch is reporting that the App Store is breaking records this holiday season, doubling its growth from November to December. Apple, not coincidentally, has also sold record amounts of iPhones and iPod Touches in the past few weeks. So now what? We’ve got to fill them up, right?

App sales have also soared alongside hardware sales. According to TechCrunch apps like Skee-ball (sold nearly 48,000 copies - 10x the sales of the previous Friday), Doodle-Jump (80,000 copies, up from 15,000), and Tap Tap Revenge 3 (downloaded 700,000 times) experienced Christmas Day surges. Surely these three apps aren’t alone.

Other companies with featured apps surely experiences surges in downloads as well as new iPhone and iPod Touch owners rushed to begin filling their home screens.

Remember when you were younger and all the kids were asking for Furbies or Cabbage Patch dolls? Well now they’re asking for iPods, iPods bundled with an app store toting 100,000+ apps.

Both MobileCrunch and TechCrunch have made it clear: developers are more than happy with the holiday surge in sales of Apple’s touchscreen devices. More iPods mean more potential customers and developers listed in the Top 25 on the App Store couldn’t be happier as kids hit the “Buy App” button on Christmas Day.
