Tumblr Strategy Part Two

Offensive content on Tumblr does not work. As “out there” as you think your sense of humor is, there is a great chance that it isn’t shared by your followers. 9/11 Jokes, Dead Baby Jokes, misogyny, racism or any content that secludes and demeans another group will do more harm than good.

Drifting through services, website and forums throughout the Internet it’s easy to pickup who the target audience is. Tumblr’s target audience seems primarily to be those that are looking for a positive experience. Users are looking for content that pleases them, thus they subscribe to who provides that content. If a user has a bunch of happy posts followed by a gruesome picture, that picture does not fall under the category of content that makes them a happy Tumblr user so they unfollow the picture-poster.

It’s very simple, really. We pick and choose what we want to see. That agreement between the user and the follower, if broken by unsightly or offensive material will guarantee user one or more less followers.

If we wanted gruesome posts we’d go to 4chan or a similar site but this is Tumblr, we’re all about the happy here.
